If we are not going to use them for scrap metal, then why can't we just sell all of the captured Silly (intentional) fleet back to the Sollies? It's worth a lot to them and they are as good as anything they've got. And we can sell them for more than what THEY paid for them if we had a crew go around and treat all the hatches with WD40. I heard half the door hatches don't work. It ain't like we have to worry about seeing them again. We'll just space-dust them next time.

Agreed, but I dunno. Might have to build a whole factory somewhere to come up with that much WD40 and a steady supply. I'd hate to think how many good starships you could build for the cost of that factory instead.... ![]() ---------------------

You can't stop mining. If you do, about 1/5 of the population of Manticore starves. |

nah - only 300 Million in Manticore B ![]() ******
RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships." |

Actually, they know perfectly well that the ships are useless. That's why they stopped trying to activate ships from the Reserve. They certainly aren't going to pay to get back useless ships when they could get exactly the same models out of the existing Reserve. Who said I was joking?! WD40 ships would represent a serious Solly upgrade!!! ![]() You just gave me a baaaad thought... We're trying to figure out what to do with all of the captured Silly fleet, and can't. Imagine their dilemma! "What will we do with all of this junk?" "And how can we justify throwing away thousands of ships to our taxpayers." Imagine being tasked with writing the speech for that State of the Union address. A speech forever remembered as "The holy crap on a cracker speech." Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. All that unless SLN junk (both hulks and intact ships could or should be a realtivly fast source of raw materials to build the six replacement space stations and other infrastructure plus given- as scrap- to Beowulf as part of the payment for turning out the equipment and parts they are now providing Manticore (and we presume Grayson).
Sure, it has to be reprocessed but its there and you can start working with it now. |

Just s general comment --
This particular thread has discussed multiple uses for the captured, intact (and mostly intact) SLN ships. We have ranged from Transmutation to chocolate (assumed to be a whimsical option) to mini-fortresses to scarecrows and strawdogs to arming minor alliance members. It would probably be better if we did not stamp / slam particular suggestions just because they did not meet a members particular goals. just saying. -- Stewart |

As far as I am concerned restoring the SLN SD's to service is like the USN asking the state of Texas if the USN could recommission the USS Texas BB-35(1914) or the city of Philadelphia if it could do the same to USS Olympia(1895) or for that matter sending out USS Constitution(1797) on a anti-piracy patrol.

Methinks -- and this is a very soft think -- that they're not even all that useful in those cases either, because we'd assume that the GA armoring is probably several levels superior to the SLN's, being maybe half a century newer, battle tested, etc. It just seems like there ought to be a way to tear everything out of the ship except the fusion plants and impellers, and put something else around the leftover frame and control runs, but we've pretty much shot every version of that idea into pieces because of the serious cofferdam armoring that all tube firing SD's have to keep damages to a smaller portion of the ship than was possible with smaller ships. ---------------------
