My Giant Rant about Frozen and HH2 (with songs included!!)

Soooooooo...

I watched "Frozen" while reading The Honor of the Queen and I couldn't help but notice some similarities between Honor and Elsa(yes, I know I'm weird, don't ask.)

1. When Elsa runs off after revealing her powers, I instantly thought of Honor when she left Yeltsin in HH2. in both cases, something provoked the main character (Elsa/Honor) into frantically departing their responsibilities. Honor was provoked by the Grayson's inability to understand her "powers" of command and authority. This is similar to how Elsa's powers lead to her fleeing Arendelle because the character is ultimately misunderstood.

2. As a direct result of Honor/Elsa leaving, bad things happen. Both Honor and Elsa are unaware of the problems they have accidently caused, they are just glad to be free of the tensions in their lives. In addition, when someone tells them what has happened, the protagonists can't believe, and don't want to believe that they can do anything to reverse the situation. Elsa is too consumed by the fear of hurting Anna to even consider reversing the storm she created. Likewise, Honor is consumed by her own fear of the Grayson's response to a female CO and in her own mind believes that leaving and staying out of the way of a critical situation is best for everyone. when she is told of Admiral Courvoisier's death, she continues to believe that she is responsible and is reluctant to return to the system even after McKeon tries to convince her otherwise.

3. Both Honor and Elsa can get emotional and need little excuse to "let it go" (Houseman and HH...)

4. Honor likes cocoa. Elsa likes chocolate. 'nough said.

5. don't make either of them mad!!

I was skeptical when you started talking about comparing Frozen with HoTQ. But you make some interesting points.

The theme you are talking about is used throughout literature. For one ancient example, check the story of Jonah. I have a vague feeling there was something in the Greek myths, too, but I can't pin it down.

Interesting!! I admit I'd never considered an Honor=Elsa parallel (would this make Mike Anna??), but I did at one point speculate about a totally fed-up Dame Estelle Matsuko taking over the Basilisk System as her own personal kingdom, striding onto a balcony in a tight, shimmery blue dress, and belting out "Let It Go" in magnificent fashion.

A long time ago I read somewhere that there are only eight or nine basic tropes in fiction, and that all themes are simply variations of those basic tropes.

Of course, if there was a Havenite version of this...



Shannon Foraker as Anna?? Shannon's demure "oops" also came out of Anna in "Frozen." and both are incredible, but misunderstood, and both have a hard time accepting the changes occurring around them caused by the "other" people/Star nations that they are involved with...
