Its been fascinating keeping an eye on the James Webb progress.
[At present just about 5 days 8 hours from launch] and in the very middle of the heat shied deployment - this seems to be one of the most critical steps. BTW there is a nice NASA dashbord giving current distances and speeds here https://jwst.nasa.gov/content/webbLaunc ... sWebb.html also a v good video on the deployment process https://webbtelescope.org/webb-science/the-observatory [edit] the video is about the middle of the page. Also the deployment did not actually start till several days later Last edited by isaac_newton on Mon Jan 31, 2022 5:10 pm, edited 3 times in total.

almost exactly at half way, and NASA have [finally] reported that one boom is extended - seems to have been soem sensor issues causing the delay
[Edit on monday 4th] sunshield seployment proceeding well. Three of the five layers have been tensioned - two to go. Once the shield is completely tensioned at all five layers, they say that about 75% of the single point failure 'opportunities' will be safely passed. |

Sky and Telescope is reporting that the sun shield is fully tensioned. So that hurdle has been cleared.

Just about to start deployment of the secondary mirror...
BTW the Nasa live TV shows the control room in real time [at least when it is doing a JWST transmission] https://www.nasa.gov/nasalive version on youtube is better I think https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21X5lGlDOfg they also have a visualisation window which shows a 3D model whose positions are controlled by telemetry from JWST... [not quite as good as a live camera on the JWST [Edit] - looking good - its deployed now BTW they showed the live ground test of the deployment. Those arms are BIG - look like telegraph poles!! |

And S&T reported yesterday that the primary mirror is unfolded and locked in place. With that, the deployment phase is apparently finished. Now they move to commissioning.

Hah - NASA have provided a really neat 3D [rotates & zooms using mouse] model of JWST.
The JWST model is in turn embedded in the solar system, so you can see not just the standard planets, but also various asteroids, other probes and more good stuff. The positions are real-time accurate - they called it a digital orrery - v neat indeed https://jwst.nasa.gov/content/webbLaunc ... sWebb.html [apparently there is a downloadable version with even more good stuff] |
