"A priest who is accused of any crime -- even child abuse -- is innocent until proven guilty, but on many occasions Church leaders had clear proof that priests were abusing children, and they hushed up the crime and moved the priest off to another parish. Such leaders must not be tolerated. They must be removed from office and from any power or control over what the Church does and says."

I'd go much further and insist that any leader who hushed up these abuses should be reported to the authorities, all evidence supplied, and then hopefully jailed for long periods. If a few Princes of the Church spend time sharing cells with large violent crims they may start to understand what they condoned for far too long.

Hi Daryl

I completely agree !!

All too often, the ones "higher up" get away scott-free !!

And this happens in civilian as well as in religious life.

Remember the old American saying about politicians, "They'd screw a snake if some one held it's head." I remember the sex scandals with young page boys a couple of decades back, not to mention "I never had sex with that woman," President Clinton. Just hope Obama did not get cheating tips from Tiger Woods on the links, that's all we need another president who can't keep it in his pants ;)

Agreed, although this is common to pretty much any organizition in my view. However, churches have more to answer for, as they stand as Populationally accepted role models.

The next few weeks as he starts out will be the most interesting as we find out how he wants to lead the church.

Now if the new Pope had been a broadly educated 30 year old woman I might have had some hope for a new start, however another conservative celibate old man has surprisingly been chosen.

Well, hes the 266th pope, so they a huge tradition behind him. and hes the first not from europe in over a thousand years, so small steps i guess. although the church reminds me of a turtle or tortoise. it may change, just so slowly that by the time it has, everyone is now dead......

Considering the catholic church does not allow women to be a priest or priestess as it were i really do not expect them to be in any kind of reforming position until that happens. The same for this current pope turning over priests and cardinals who either committed child abuse or hid it and covered it up( i dont think he will do that) considering there is evidence that he aided and abetted human rights abuses in argentina when the dictatorship was in power there.
