Governments attempt to "create equality" not by raising up the losers, but by hammering down the winners.

It brings to mind the words of the great Roman historian Tacitus: “The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.”

The more things change; the more they stay the same.

If programs don’t work, shouldn’t they be abandoned?

Of the eight states that are closest to bankruptcy, seven of them have been generally controlled by XXXX over the last few decades (Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, California and Kentucky – which was largely controlled by XXXX until the last decade or so).

From a posting talking about questions XXXX aren't asked. Can you estimate what XXXX is

A compromise is a situation in which nobody gets what they want.

A successful compromise is one that pisses everybody off equally.

The goal should be a win-win situation, not a compromise.

The welfare state must absolutely keep the people from the individualistic tendency of thinking for themselves.

This is largely done by substituting slogans and fallacies for evidence and logic.

But one can always count on a government program creating the opposite effect of what its name implies.

Hmmm.

Law enforcement as a whole has moved away from the more observational type of investigating, where they watch a person until that person commits a crime, to a more proactive role as the ones with the criminal plan, oftentimes selling it to unsuspecting “suspects” whose only “crime” beforehand was to speak what they believe by exercising their 1st Amendment rights.

Many, yes. Isn't entrapment illegal? As a whole

There was a line from a TV show, Blackstone. Not sure if it was borrowed from somewhere else, but it's a line more politicians could stand to learn and heed.

"Leadership is about submission to duty, not elevation to power."

In talking to His disciples, Jesus said "You know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority on them. But it shall not be so among you, but whoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; and whoever will be chief among you. let him be your servant: even as the Son of Man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his live a ransom for many."

The remnants of this idea are seen when we speak of public servants, or call government leaders ministers. Too often this is seen in the breach, more than the practice.

The value of any award lies in the accomplishment it symbolizes.

The "social justice" crowd wants everybody to get a trophy for nothing, and pretend that it's worth something.

That will not create value where none exists; it can only destroy the value of awards that have been earned.

As long as sex and money exist, they will be exchanged.

This one I thought was funny. I wouldn't have cared who said it.

Aussie Attorney General: “If the [climate] science is settled, why do we need research scientists to continue inquiring into the settled science?”

On the other hand no research is actually wasted in my opinion. ;)

Make it honest research, and we agree. IMHO, we need more work on replication tests - some scientists have been investigating the quality of scientific papers under "publish or perish," and the results are not good.

Did the Library of Congress ever read the work of the Greek historian Thucydides, who warned some 2,500 years ago that in times of social upheaval, partisans would make words "change their ordinary meaning and ... take that which was now given them."

The White House wordsmiths should reread George Orwell's 1946 essay "Politics and the English Language," which warned that "political writing is bad writing" and "has to consist largely of euphemism."
