Interesting discussion, but I don't believe that Gcomeau is a loser in this case as he is not a US citizen.
The old story of winning a battle but losing the war may well be apt here. The sheer bastardy of putting this person into this position may well mark the end of Trump and Co's comfortable ride.

A few years ago we had a conservative PM who was in power for 11 years, however somewhat like happens in the US he never had complete control of both houses, until the start of his last electoral cycle. He proceeded to redeem promises made to his harder core conservatives by bringing draconian employment legislation into law. Next election the landslide carried both his government and his own personal seat away.
