We also have to consider the millions of people who have immigrated here legally, as well as those who are in the queue. It is incredibly unfair to them to grant amnesty to those who have jumped ahead of them in line illegally.

I don't object to the immigration part, just the illegal part.

A major part of the problem with any immigration reform is the question of whether there will be enforcement.

With the current party (Democrat) in charge, there will never be any effective enforcement. After all, to them, illegal aliens (they prefer to call them undocumented immigrants/workers) are future voters. Just you wait, as soon as the illegals are allowed to stay without being deported, there will be a massive push to get them to being citizens as fast as possible and to get them registered to vote.

The problem is how to tell he illegal aliens from the genuine refugee's, or in our case down here in Oz, to stop the countries where those refugees end up from shoving them in a boat and sending them here.

One of the fastest ways to stop illegal immigration is conscription.
As soon as word gets around that any illegal immigrant of age will be forced to serve in the armed forces for five to ten years (before being granted citizenship is they survive), the number of immigrants wanting to enter the country in question will plummet to near-zero. After all, they don't want to move into a new country only to find themselves on the front lines.

Note that this is not a nice way of doing it and the Yuman Rites people will howl if it is ever put forwards as a viable option.

An alternative would be putting them to work in rebuilding the country's infrastructure for the same amount of time. If they want to come here illegally, that is the price they'd pay when caught. 5-10 years of service, then if they still want to be citizens they can get in the back of the line behind the legal immigrants.

You're right in that the human rights morons would scream bloody murder about it.

On the contrary, many men have served in America's army
in order to gain citizenship!

Therefore this is a Great Idea!

The problem with any legalization scheme is that the ones proposed by the politicians to date aren't onerous enough. The pay a $5000 or so fine isn't nearly enough to discourage border jumpers in the future. (And don't forget the visa overstays, that's at least half the problem).

However the solutions proposed here seem to be sufficiently onerous to actually discourage illegal immigration. Perhaps we could offer them a choice:

Choose 1 of:

1. 5-10 years in the military
2. 5-10 years hard labor fixing infrastructure
3. Pay a $10 million fine (the rich will always get out of it anyway so might as well let the US treasury benefit instead of some crooked lawyer)

Also add in

4. If you have been in the military for more than 10 years you may choose a family member to be legalized, in thanks for your service.

4 should be spouse and children, though I'd want to be careful about the children.

We had a lot of Italians stay from the Snowy River Scheme (Dams etc), so that concept could work. Some sort of national service, sign up for 10 years and the Govt sub contracts you to a major construction project. Wages etc would be an issue, but still.

I also prefer than any immigration package be in the form of multiple individual bills rather than a single omnibus package to avoid Obamacare overcomplexity syndrome.

Avoid the 'We have to pass it before we know what is in it' malarkey of the Ombamacare bill?
