David never said that at all. What he had consistently said was that he saw no reason to put the RHN ships into Manticoran service. -------------------------

I did not miss your comment! I just felt the subject was not worth commenting on! Their will always be noobs, veterans, or new people posting in the forums on subjects that an experienced forum posters think are dead. Deal with it! It's the nature of forums with a long standing series.

...orbital space stations/technology primers/resources for third-rate space nations?
Given how prone to looks-over-actual-capability the Sollies are, many planetary leaders would love to have their own taken-from-an-SD holograph-capable briefing table to use in their cabinet meetings... And having a huge metal shell with its own airlocks, life-support systems and molycircs-to-be-stripped-out-and-repurposed in orbit ready for add-ons to be welded to it, I can see quite a high demand... And all Manticore will need to do is pilot them into position and then blow up the nodes for an instant conversion. ~~~~~~
I can't write anywhere near as well as Weber But I try nonetheless, And even do my own artwork. (Now on Twitter)and mentioned by RFC! ACNH Dreams at DA-6594-0940-7995 |

Maggots are also useful when fishing, although in this case it is fishing for new ideas. Weird Harold did indeed come up with a new twist in his fishing, as somewhat proved by the length of this thread. On that note, Harold, one of the reasons you gave for leaving the equipment aboard ship was the difficulty of matching power requirements. This actually is a non-issue as all the Talbott planets have already imported Sollie tech. Their power grid should already be set up to use it. _
Try to take a fisherman's fish and you will be tomorrows bait!!! |

IF they do have Solarian tech, they likely have Civilian Solarian Tech -- which may or may not be compatible with Solarian Military Tech. As an example: US Military aircraft (and most world aircraft) have 115VAC 400Hz 3 Phase and 28VDC available to run aircraft systems. US Civilian tech expects 110VAC 60Hz Single Phase, 220VAC Single phase and/or 12VDC. (European electrical standards are different to either US standard) Some equipment will work with 50Hz, 60Hz or 400Hz with no problems. Other equipment releases all of its magic smoke and quits working when plugged into 400Hz power. My main point is that I know the equipment works where it is, I do NOT know that it will work when transferred without special power conversion and regulation. .

Are you trying to prove you do not have a clue about electricity? If so, your last post does a bang up job. You could have made it much shorter and simply stated: "Regarding electricity, I am ignorant. Therefore I will make a problem for said SLN equipment where one does not exist." Voltage, frequency, phase manipulation is absurdly simple. Been doing it since the early 1900's. ![]() ![]() ![]() PS. For the ignorant(not that I am a raging expert myself) 480V, 240V, 120V, 48V, 36V, 28-24V, 12V, 5V, 3V systems both 1P and 3P are all used in civilian wiring. It is not hard to read the labels and wire accordingly. Just depends on type of wiring on said system. Only real diff is the 50Hz(euro), 60Hz(US), 400Hz Aircraft, etc. A lot(most) equipment does not care what frequency the AC power comes in at if it is close to its design frequency. FOREX 50Hz and 60Hz equipment. Too far, then one runs into overspeeding problems in motors. Some Induction motors will not run at all. Then there are the DC lines like the ones from Canada to Minneapolis MN. If we are smart, we would boost the frequency into the kHz frequency and save a TON of power in transmission line loss and everyone rejoice with cheaper appliances with smaller motors. Of course one just needs a proper frequency modulator and this problem is not a "problem" at all. But, to the ignorant, I guess the above would be "giant problems". Hence my comment upthread about it not taking too long to set up converters for equipment being transferred from the ships to ground. Hell, for that matter, transformers are probably off-the-shelf items, just like the ones I used in England. =================

And that's assuming it's not a built in capability. Like how the iphones charger will accept either 120V or 240V. The only thing you need for one of those is the plug adapter. http://store.apple.com/us/question/answ ... JTXDFAK9TA Considering how many planets there are in the Solarian League, I'd expect making equipment with power supplies that accept a large amount of wall voltages would be standard. In fact, since in Fire Season the problem with the non-Manticoran coms was in connecting to the satellites and they were fine for local calls and no power adapters were mentioned as being needed, I'd say it is the standard. Add in the references to wireless power in OBS and Beauty and the Beast on at least a to the house level, it's kinda hard to say if they'd face any of the conversion problems we have today. |
