Yo Donnachaidh, The senate rules allow Harry Reed to block any bill from the floor, now the Speaker of the House has the same power :P

Actually it's the Majority Leader, not the Speaker of the House and it is only in regard to the joint resolution for FY2014. So it's not the same. And I don't think Harry Reed should have that power. For that matter I think the filibuster rule should be disposed of, both parties have abused it to the detriment of the American people.

This is going to get ugly.

When even the National Park Police are cooped to act like goon squads and the Feds have 1.6 billion rounds of hollow point ammo (not practicevammo) stock piled, they are primed to go postal on citizens.

When was that? The only trucker protest I was able to find relating to the shutdown was by a group called "Truckers Ride for the Constitution" and they didn't seem to accomplish much, certainly not to the extent that picture implies.

I found this to be a fairly even handed treatment of the shutdown and why people are acting the way they are in Congress.

It has a couple of interesting segments.

From PBS and starts out bashing the "R"'s, but seemed to fit this whole topic like a glove.

Hope it helps,

For that matter I think the filibuster rule should be disposed of, both parties have abused it to the detriment of the American people.

I actually like it in the case of the individual filibuster. Sen. Rand Paul famously used it last spring to bring attention to an issue near and dear to his heart. Given how little most of these self centered individuals sacrifice, it is impressive when one of the idealists suffers through some intense personal discomfort to make a point. I tend to admire those individuals whether or not I agree with their proposals.

On the other hand the group filibusters can be a problem. However, both sides are used to this tactic and plan for it in their strategizing. It seems to be more useful to the minority party, giving them a tool to force the majority to compromise on their legislation. So since it is often used to drive legislation toward the center, I'm cautiously in favor of it in general just not in particular instances such as the current situation.

I saw this quote from President Henry Truman used in reference to the shutdown.

“I sit here all day trying to persuade people to do the things they ought to have sense enough to do without my persuading them. That’s all the powers of the President amount to.”

Good cartoon explaining the mess, one side believes we can't go bankrupt [ask the Greeks], one side wants to slow the slide to disaster. Both are at loggerheads, and both are to blame. I loved one reply to this cartoon on Facebook:

Only problem is how, and a pain free solution is not possible, sorry to darken your day, but that's fact Jack. We have become a nation of swine, "Cut the other pig's swill not mine." "Steal [tax] from the other pig not me." Yada yada yada.

If we continue on the old path eventually we drown in debt when the Fed's Ponzi scheme collapses into hyperinflation. As always the little guy will get the short end of the stick, the rich rats are already abandoning the ship.

It's always seemed closer to "Raise the ceiling" "Turn off spending.*"

*But only on things I don't approve of/don't care about, spend more on these 73 other things and cut taxes for these people that gave me lots of campaign money.

The only difference I see between them is the Republicans say spend less and tax less but only get around to the taxing less while the Democrats just spend and tax more.
