Water transmits shock waves vastly more efficiently than air. So the kinetic energy will do considerable damage at ranges beyond what it would in air Hm? |

Martin As folk replied, a "bloodbath" is almost guaranteed #1 such an extreme schism will stir incredible passions. As I've suggested, imagine someone offering proof that St Paul was a murderous tyrannical psychopath and conman who set the Church up to live off folks' backs...and Judas was a patsy and even Lucifer was too! Even in today's Western world, if such came with evidence....oh boy would it provoke a vicious storm! Take it back to the 15th Century...and it would provoke carnage. Safehold being like a an Early Renaissance culture #2 The Church as a uniting force and usually peaceful arbiter, is a broken reed. It's also financially broke, more or less. And the reactionaries in South Herchong and Desnair are about ready to split from the Church, while many of the Siddarmark folk are very angry at the Church for several reasons That prevents the Church from keeping things calm #3 The power and revenge seeking loons who now rule South Harchong, Desnair and Siddarmark, are full of hate and absolutely are working their way up to war with Charis and its allies It will likely begin as a war against the Allies, most probably attacks on North Harchong by South Harchong as primarily terror raids at first an invasion of maybe Western Siddarmark by Desnair or an annexation, more likely invasions of Silkiah and Dohlar Charis-hating bigotry fuelled by Siddarmark's junta will lead to bloodshed and internal strife in Siddarmark Glacierheart will be besieged with a few other areas because they are more moderate/pro-Charis. Eventually war against Charis, war to the knife. Clynthan's concentration camps and the Inquisition's sadism and police state style thuggery not only left a lot of hate and anger behind that sill fuel fresh slaughter if there is trouble, It also gives a blueprint for mass extermination and absolute tyranny for malign leaders to learn, use and even improve on.... All these factors will lead to a time of absolute carnage. "The centre cannot hold...." |

Not to put to fine a point on it, but isn't that what basically happened? Remember St. Paul was a Roman prosecutor before his conversion, and the Paulian church is quite different from the church as originally established. There is a reason the various schisms happened over the millennia. |

Sorry, it does not work that way. An airplane is built to keep a higher pressure in. It will not keep a higher pressure out. (despite what that 30 year old movie showed) Airplanes make for lousy submarines, and submarines make lousy airplanes for the same reasons. It is easy to make a unidirectional pressure seal. Much, much harder to make a bidirectional seal. |

Well, I didn't wish to say be so blunt, lol... :p The desire to have an "organized religion" soon over turned the movement's origins. Be it for zealotry or graft, that's what usually happens, alas. |

But the distance spreads it out and then a lot of energy bounces rather than penetrates when it hits the ground. The important part about water is you can't punch holes in it--it's self-healing armor. |

that is not actually true - water needs time to flow back into the hole. chances are that the OBS isn't heaving it's rocks [or crowbars or whatever] fast enough that you can treat the water as effectively solid, but it will be fast enough that each impact displaces a significant volume. space the impacts close enough together and the system would be able to 'drill' through the water column to considerable depth.

If you try to drill water like that the later-arriving rods (rocks have to be too big to get through the atmosphere) the later-arriving rods will smack into water thrown up by earlier impacts. An awful lot of energy will be expended blowing up splash. Spread them apart far enough they don't hit splash and they hit reformed water. The only way you could hope to drill water is if you could fire a whole bunch on the same bearing like a train--but no orbital facility could do that. |

This thing devastated the whole continent, I must remind... Its obviously have enough velocity for projectiles to hit water faster than the speed of sound in water. ------------------------------
Oh well, if shortening the front is what the Germans crave, Let's shorten it to very end - the length of Fuhrer's grave. (Red Army lyrics from 1945) |

Have you ever seen a high-speed photo sequence of splashing? That vertical column is the last part to form, as the result of the returning water colliding. The free droplets separating from the top are evidence of a shock forming and running up the column.
The _initial_ ejecta created by the impact itself are thrown out in a cone with an opening angle that depends on the impact velocity and surface properties - and I freely admit that I don't know what that will be. [for giant impacts, it's typically 45-60 degrees above horizontal]. For one thing, as Dilandu points out, any reasonable OBS impactor will be coming in at a multiple of the speed of sound in water, and that matters, although it isn't likely to be enough that the surface can be treated as solid.
