I've been wondering why Yildun was not attacked by the GA. Technodyne owns the place lock, stock and barrel. There is no habitable planet, as far as I can tell. I have no idea what defenses may be in place, but I've read nothing about any fleet presence. After the first group of League attacks on neutral systems, it would seem to me that Yildun would be a good place for a reprisal. and a warning that what goes around, comes around. If it is heavily defended, so much the better. That would make it a rehearsal for the Grand Fleet's assault on Sol System.

There was a short discussion about that in TEiF. The reason is that Yildun is not a member of the League, therefore it wasn't technically a belligerent in the war. It's a business and the business has the right to supply arms to whomever it wants to (so long as it's legal). But of course that's a technicality, Technodyne was not playing by the rules, is deeply corrupt, and moreover was a patsy to the Alignment. What I'm guessing is that TIY was supplier to far more than just the League and the GA judged that pissing those other clients off was not worth it. It's not like they were going to discovery anything important there that they wouldn't from the annex on Ganymede. |

Basically, the GA are responsible belligerents. They didn't want to accept the consequences of attacking Yildun, however legitimate a target it might technically be. The lack of a habitable planet is exactly why, it means there is nowhere to evacuate the population - four or five million people - there if their stations are damaged. Or even sabotaged by the MAlign.
Here's what RFC said about it. |

If I recall correctly RFC told us that the main reason is that it's just about directly on the opposite side of the League from Manticore, which also puts it quite far from from the closest Manticoran owned terminus (Lynx). Beowulf would put you a bit closer, though still on the wrong side of Sol -- but they're not likely to want Manticore launching offenses towards the League from there (at least not until after Hypatia and then the direct SLN attack on Beowulf). I don't know if Erewhon would let the Joshua terminus be used for that -- but even that isn't exactly close to where Yildum must lie. Crown of Slaves tells use that "Yildun's location, roughly a hundred and eighty-three light-years from Earth" (RFC's post that munroburton provided while I was drafting this confirms that this distance is correct; even if the rest of the description that follows isn't) So it's already more than a 22 day trip from Sol to Yildun -- so any Manticoran fleet dispatched to there would face an even longer trip; and thus be out of play for at least couple months. Basically they didn't judge the likely prize worth the effort it would take to go claim it. |

According to RFC's post that munroburton linked to above, there's a wormhole only 65.9 light-years from Sol that connects to Yildun. That wormhole could have been seized as part of Lacoön II. But all the other arguments are still valid. |

There is a thread on it as well.
Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |
